How Long Does It Take to Charge an EV at Home?

It depends heavily on charger level

There are two realistic home charging options, and the difference between them is large. A Level 1 charger just uses a standard 120V household outlet, no special installation needed, but it's slow: roughly 40 to 50+ hours for a full charge on an average EV, or about 4 to 6 km of range added per hour.

  • ✓ Level 1 (120V, standard outlet), around 4-6 km of range per hour. Fine for a plug-in hybrid or very low daily mileage, impractical for most full EVs.
  • ✓ Level 2 (240V, 30-50A, professionally installed), around 20-45 km of range per hour, depending on amperage and your vehicle's onboard charger. A full overnight charge (8 hours) typically covers 250-350+ km of range.
  • ✓ Real-world use, most EV owners plug in every night and simply top off whatever was used that day, rather than charging from empty. An 8-hour overnight Level 2 charge covers the vast majority of daily driving with room to spare.

What actually determines your charging speed

Three things matter: the amperage of the circuit we install, your vehicle's maximum onboard charging rate (some vehicles cap lower than the charger can supply), and your battery's total size. We size the circuit to your vehicle and your panel's available capacity, and can walk you through realistic charging times for your specific car during the estimate.
